Navigating Divine Law in Sharia-less Systems Lessons from Yusuf and Muhammad

When divine law meets a world without Sharia, how does one uphold justice and faith? The story of Prophet Yusuf (as) and the example of Prophet Muhammad (saws) offer profound lessons. Yusuf (as) lived in a society where the king’s law ruled, not divine law. Yet, he applied God’s law with wisdom and strategy, even when the legal system did not support him. Later, Prophet Muhammad (saws) established a society fully rooted in Divine Revelation without compromising to existing customs or political pressures. Their lives teach us how to live, defend, and apply Divine law with excellence, whether as a minority or when empowered.

Yusuf’s Challenge: Applying Divine Law in a Non-Sharia System

Prophet Yusuf (as) lived in Egypt, a land governed by the king’s laws rather than Sharia. His story shows how to navigate a legal system that does not directly recognize divine law.

  • The dilemma with Binyamin

Yusuf (as) wanted to keep his brother Binyamin with him, but the king’s law did not allow detaining someone without legal cause. Yusuf (as) could not simply impose divine law; he had to work within the system.

  • Strategic application of divine principles

Instead of openly defying the law, Yusuf (as) used wisdom and strategy. He arranged for Binyamin to stay by creating circumstances that aligned with the king’s rules but also fulfilled divine justice.

  • Preserving Tawhid and justice

Yusuf (as) did not compromise his belief in the oneness of God or justice. He showed that even as a minority in a corrupt system, one can uphold divine law by understanding the environment and acting with conviction.

This example teaches us that when living under laws that do not reflect divine principles, believers can still maintain their faith and justice by applying divine law thoughtfully and strategically.

Muhammad’s Example: Establishing Divine Law When Empowered

In contrast to Yusuf (as), Prophet Muhammad (saws) had the opportunity to build a society based entirely on Divine Revelation after migrating to Madinah.

  • Rejecting existing tribal customs

The tribes of Madinah had their own customs and laws. Muhammad (saws) did not blend these with divine law to gain political favor. Instead, he established a new legal and social order based solely on the Quran and Sunnah.

  • No borrowing from foreign legal systems

Unlike many rulers who might borrow from Persian or Roman laws to please different groups, Muhammad (saws) kept the law pure and rooted in divine guidance.

  • Building a society of justice and Tawhid

This new society was based on the oneness of God and justice for all, regardless of tribal or cultural background. It was a clear example of applying divine law fully and faithfully.

Muhammad’s example shows how to lead and govern when empowered, without bending divine law to fit culture or politics.

Lessons for Today: Living Divine Law with Excellence

Both Yusuf (as) and Muhammad (saws) model Ihsan—excellence in faith and action. Their stories offer practical lessons for believers today.

  • Understand your environment

Like Yusuf (as), when living in societies without Sharia, understand the legal and cultural context. Use wisdom to apply divine principles without compromising faith.

  • Stand firm in Tawhid and justice

Never dilute the core of divine law. Uphold the oneness of God and justice even when it is difficult or unpopular.

  • Apply divine law with strategy and conviction

Yusuf (as) shows that strategy is necessary when divine law is not the system’s law. Muhammad (saws) shows that when empowered, divine law should be applied fully and clearly.

  • Avoid mixing divine law with corrupt customs

Muhammad (saws) rejected blending divine law with tribal or foreign customs. This preserves the purity and authority of divine law.

  • Live, defend, and apply divine law with excellence

Ihsan means going beyond belief to action. It means living divine law in daily life, defending it when challenged, and applying it with care and excellence.

Practical Steps for Applying These Lessons

  • Educate yourself on divine law and local laws

Know how to find ways to uphold your faith within your context.

  • Engage with your community wisely

Build relationships that allow you to practice and promote justice without conflict.

  • Use wisdom in conflict resolution

Like Yusuf (as), find creative solutions that respect both divine law and local rules.

  • Advocate for justice and Tawhid clearly

When possible, promote the full application of divine law as Muhammad (saws) did.

  • Maintain personal integrity and excellence

Your example can inspire others to respect and follow divine law.
