Protecting Yourself from Iblis: Signs, Invocations, and Strengthening Faith

The struggle against Iblis and his traps is a challenge every believer faces. Recognizing the signs of Allah and using the right invocations can shield us from Satan’s whispers and misguidance. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba offers deep insights into practical ways to protect ourselves and our families by understanding these signs and strengthening our faith.

Recognizing the Signs of Allah to Guard Against Iblis

One of the key ways to protect yourself from Iblis is to be aware of the signs Allah has placed in the world around us. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba highlights specific natural signs mentioned in the Sunnah that indicate the presence or influence of Satan:

  • The braying of a donkey

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “If a donkey brays, then seek refuge in Allah from the outcast.” This is because donkeys' braying, especially at night, is believed to have been heard by Satan nearby. This sign reminds believers to seek Allah’s protection immediately.

  • The barking of dogs

Dogs barking unexpectedly can also signal the presence of jinn or evil spirits. While dogs are part of creation, their sudden barking can be a warning to seek refuge in Allah.

  • The crowing of roosters

Roosters crowing at unusual times can be another sign of unseen spiritual activity. This calls for vigilance and prayer.

These signs serve as reminders to turn to Allah for protection and to be mindful of the spiritual realm that surrounds us.

The Importance of Seeking Refuge Before Reciting the Quran

Before reading the Quran, it is essential to seek refuge in Allah from Satan. The Quran itself instructs us:

“And when you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast. Lo! he has no power over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.” (Al Nahl: 98-99)

Seeking refuge is not just a formality. Without it, the personal jinn or evil influences may cause a person to twist the meanings of the Quran, misinterpret verses, or add their own ideas. This can weaken faith and lead to confusion.

Practical tip: Always say A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast) before starting to read or listen to the Quran. This simple act acts like a spiritual shield.

Praying for Loved Ones as a Form of Protection

Protection from Iblis is not only personal but also extends to our families. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to pray for his grandsons, al-Hasan and al-Husain, saying:

“I seek refuge for you two by Allah’s perfect word, from every Satan and evil suggestion and from every evil eye.”

This prayer shows the importance of invoking Allah’s protection over those we love. It is a practice that all believers can adopt to safeguard their families from harmful influences.

Using Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nass for Protection

Among the most powerful invocations for protection are the last two chapters of the Quran: Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nass. Uqbah ibn Amr narrated that the Prophet said:

“The people did not make invocations like these two: say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of Daybreak,’ and say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of Mankind.’” (Recorded by al-Nasaai)

These Surahs specifically seek refuge from all forms of evil, including the evil of Satan, envy, and harmful creatures. Reciting them regularly, especially before sleeping or when feeling vulnerable, strengthens spiritual defenses.

Understanding the Role of Seeking Refuge in Strengthening Faith

Many believers wonder why they read the Quran, pray, and fast but still feel weak in faith. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba explains this with a powerful analogy:

Seeking refuge in Allah is like a sword in a warrior’s hands. If the warrior’s arm is strong, the sword can penetrate and defeat the enemy. If the arm is weak, even the sharpest sword will leave no mark.

This means that simply reciting prayers or Quranic verses is not enough. One must have strong faith and truly rely on Allah’s protection. The person cannot be deliberately or intentionally engaging in sinful actions, for the Prophet said that Allah does not accept any of your good deeds if you are intentionally committing sins, and he may or may not accept your supplications.

Practical Steps to Protect Yourself from Iblis

Here are some actionable steps based on Ustadah Laila Nasheeba’s teachings:

  • Be aware of natural signs such as donkey brays, dog barks, and rooster crows, and respond by seeking refuge in Allah immediately.

  • Always seek refuge before reciting the Quran to prevent misinterpretation and spiritual interference.

  • Pray regularly for your family’s protection using the Prophet’s supplication or your own heartfelt prayers.

  • Recite Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nass daily to build a strong spiritual shield.

  • Strengthen your faith through consistent worship and reliance on Allah, making your spiritual “arm” strong enough to wield the sword of seeking refuge effectively.

  • Stay away from intentional actions of disobedience

Building a Stronger Connection with Allah

Protection from Iblis is deeply connected to the strength of your relationship with Allah. This means:

  • Maintaining regular prayers with mindfulness

  • Reading and reflecting on the Quran with understanding

  • Making sincere du’a (supplication) for yourself and others

  • Avoiding actions that weaken faith, such as neglecting worship or engaging in sinful behavior

When your faith is strong, Satan’s influence diminishes, and you become more resilient to his traps.
