The reality of Paradise and Hell is a fundamental belief in Islam, yet some groups have questioned their existence before the Day of Resurrection. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba recently began a series titled Paradise and Hell, emphasizing that both realms already exist, a truth upheld by Ahlus Sunnah wal Jummah. This post explores the theological foundations of this belief, contrasts it with opposing views, and highlights Quranic verses and hadith that affirm the existence of Paradise and Hell.

The Belief in the Existence of Paradise and Hell
Ahlus Sunnah wal Jummah, the mainstream Sunni tradition, holds that Paradise and Hell are already created and exist in a form beyond human perception. This belief is rooted in the understanding that Allah’s knowledge and power transcend time and space. The realms of reward and punishment are prepared and waiting for the Day of Judgment, when souls will be sent to their final abode.
This view contrasts with certain sects, such as the Mu'tazilah and Qaadariyyah, who deny the pre-existence of these realms. They argue that Paradise and Hell will be created only on the Day of Resurrection. Their reasoning is based on the idea that it would be illogical for these places to exist long before they are inhabited or used.
The Mu'tazilah and Qaadariyyah Perspective
The Mu'tazilah and Qaadariyyah emerged with theological positions that often challenged traditional Sunni beliefs. They claimed that Allah would create Paradise and Hell only at the time of resurrection. Their argument was influenced by a desire to rationalize divine actions, comparing Allah’s creation to human actions and logic.
This approach led them to reject many Quranic verses and prophetic traditions that clearly indicate the current existence of these realms. They also adopted ideas from the Jahmiyyah, a sect named after Jahm ibn Safwan, who denied Allah’s ability to see. This theological deviation further distanced them from orthodox Sunni beliefs.
Quranic Evidence for the Existence of Paradise and Hell
The Quran contains numerous verses affirming the existence of Paradise and Hell as prepared places. For example:
Surah Al-Imran (3:131):
“And fear the fire, which is prepared for the disbelievers.”
This verse explicitly states that the fire (Hell) is already prepared, indicating its pre-existence.
Surah Al-Hadid (57:21):
“Race with one another in hastening towards forgiveness from your Lord, and Paradise the width whereof is as the width of the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Messengers. That is the Grace of Allah, which He bestows on whom He is pleased. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.”
The verse describes Paradise as already prepared, emphasizing its vastness and readiness for the believers.
These verses demonstrate that Paradise and Hell are not future creations but existing realities awaiting their inhabitants.
Hadith Supporting the Reality of Paradise and Hell
Prophetic traditions also confirm the existence of these realms. One notable hadith reported by Muslim from Aishah (ra) recounts a solar eclipse that occurred during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). The Prophet said:
“Whilst I was standing here, I saw everything that you have been promised, I even saw myself picking some of the fruits of Paradise, when you saw me stepping forward. And I saw Hellfire, parts of it consuming one another, which is why you saw me step back.”
This vivid vision indicates that Paradise and Hell are tangible realities in the unseen world, accessible to the Prophet’s insight.
Why Some Deny the Pre-Existence of Paradise and Hell
The denial by groups such as the Mu'tazilah and the Qaadariyyah stems from their attempt to apply human logic to divine matters. They argue that since Paradise and Hell will not be inhabited for a long time, it makes no sense for them to exist now. This reasoning reflects a misunderstanding of Allah’s attributes and the nature of the unseen.
They also misinterpret texts and accuse those who affirm the pre-existence of these realms of innovation (bid’ah). This accusation overlooks the clear scriptural evidence and the consensus of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jummah scholars throughout Islamic history.
The Importance of Affirming This Belief
Belief in the current existence of Paradise and Hell has practical implications for a Muslim’s faith and actions. It reinforces the reality of the afterlife and the certainty of divine justice. Knowing that these realms already exist encourages believers to strive for Allah’s pleasure and avoid actions that lead to punishment.
This belief also aligns with the understanding of Allah’s omnipotence and timelessness. Allah’s creation is not bound by human constraints, and His knowledge encompasses all that has been, is, and will be.
