Life often overwhelms us with challenges, successes, and blessings. In such moments, it is easy to lose sight of the source of our strength and forget the importance of gratitude and humility. This week, Dr. Ibrahim Dremali’s reflections on Surat Hud offer profound insights into these themes. Surat Hud, a chapter in the Quran, tells the story of Prophet Hud and his people, the ‘Ad, who were giants blessed with great strength and beautiful physiques. Despite their blessings, they became arrogant and ungrateful, leading to their downfall. Their story holds timeless lessons for us today, especially when we face the pressures of modern life.

Who Was Hud and What Happened to His People?

Prophet Hud was sent to the people of ‘Ad, a tribe known for their towering stature and impressive architecture. These people were giants, physically strong and blessed with abundant resources. Their homes and buildings were so large and well-constructed that their remnants can still be seen in Yemen today. Despite these blessings, they refused to follow Hud’s call to worship Allah sincerely and live righteously.

The people of ‘Ad believed their strength and prosperity made them invincible. They thought they were superior to Hud and ignored his warnings. Although they acknowledged Allah’s existence, they forgot that their power and success came from Him. This arrogance and ingratitude led Allah to punish them, destroying their civilization.

This story highlights a critical point: blessings can lead to arrogance if we forget their true source. The people of ‘Ad serve as a warning against pride and ungratefulness.

The Danger of Forgetting the Source of Our Blessings

Dr. Dremali emphasized that many of us fall into the same trap as the people of ‘Ad. When Allah blesses us with wealth, health, or success, we may start to believe these are solely our achievements. We forget that without Allah’s will and mercy, none of these would be possible.

This mindset breeds two major sins: arrogance and ingratitude. Both are considered forms of disbelief because they reject the reality of Allah’s power and generosity. Arrogance makes us blind to our limitations, while ingratitude hardens our hearts against recognizing blessings.

In modern life, this can look like:

  • Taking credit for achievements without acknowledging help or divine support

  • Complaining about minor inconveniences despite overall comfort

  • Ignoring ethical or spiritual responsibilities because of material success

Recognizing Allah as the source of all blessings keeps us humble and thankful. It reminds us to use our gifts wisely and with compassion.

The Role of Gratitude in Building a Balanced Life

Gratitude is more than saying “thank you.” It is a deep awareness and appreciation of the good in our lives, including the unseen support from Allah. Practicing gratitude helps us:

  • Stay grounded during success

  • Build resilience during hardship

  • Strengthen relationships by appreciating others

  • Foster contentment and peace of mind

For example, when someone receives a promotion at work, gratitude involves recognizing colleagues' efforts, the opportunities provided, and the divine blessing behind it all. This attitude prevents arrogance and encourages generosity.

In daily life, simple habits can cultivate gratitude:

  • Reflecting on blessings each day

  • Expressing thanks to family and friends

  • Helping those less fortunate

  • Praying regularly with sincerity

These practices create a mindset that values humility and acknowledges dependence on Allah.

Humility as a Shield Against Arrogance

Humility is the natural companion of gratitude. It means understanding our place in the world and recognizing that all power and success come from Allah. The people of ‘Ad lost this perspective, which led to their destruction.

Humility does not mean weakness. Instead, it is a strength that protects us from pride and helps us grow spiritually and socially. Humble people are open to learning, forgiving, and cooperating with others.

In modern contexts, humility can be seen in leaders who credit their teams, individuals who admit their mistakes, and communities that support one another without judgment.

The Blessing of a Righteous Partner

Dr. Dremali also highlighted the blessing of having a good, righteous wife who advises and supports her husband. A partner who encourages humility and gratitude can be a powerful influence in maintaining a balanced life.

A righteous spouse helps:

  • Remind us of our values and faith

  • Offer wise counsel during difficult times

  • Celebrate blessings with sincerity

  • Keep us accountable to ethical and spiritual standards

This partnership strengthens the family unit and creates a nurturing environment for growth.

Applying the Lessons of Surat Hud Today

The story of Hud and his people is not just history; it is a mirror reflecting challenges we face now. To apply these lessons:

  • Regularly remind yourself of the source of your blessings

  • Practice gratitude daily, even for small things

  • Cultivate humility by recognizing your limits and the help you receive

  • Surround yourself with people who encourage righteousness and honesty

  • Use your blessings to help others and contribute positively to society

By doing so, we avoid the pitfalls of arrogance and ingratitude that destroyed the people of ‘Ad.

Life’s blessings are gifts that come with responsibility. Surat Hud teaches us that forgetting this leads to downfall, while remembering it brings peace and success. Let us take these lessons to heart and build lives marked by gratitude, humility, and faith.
