The Terrifying Reality of Hell: The Food, Drink, and Clothing of Hellfire

Hell is described in Islamic teachings as a place of immense suffering and punishment for those who reject faith and commit evil. The descriptions found in the Qur’an and Hadith reveal a reality that is beyond human comprehension, emphasizing the severity of the consequences for disbelief and sin. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba’s class on Paradise and Hell sheds light on the extreme size and nature of the people of Hell, their punishment, and the elements that contribute to their torment.

The Immense Size of the People of Hell

One of the most striking aspects Ustadah Laila Nasheeba discusses is the enormous size of the people of Hell. According to a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"The distance between the Kaafir in Hell will be like three days’ traveling for a fast rider." (Muslim, 4/290)

This means that the physical form of the disbelievers in Hell will be so vast that the space between their bodies will take days to cross. Another narration further describes their size:

"The molar of the kaafir or the eye be like Uhud, and the thickness of his skin will be like a journey of three (days)." (Muslim)

Mount Uhud is a large mountain near Medina, so this comparison highlights the unimaginable scale of their bodies. This extreme size serves a purpose: to increase their suffering and punishment. The Qur’an states:

“...that they may taste the Penalty...” (Qur’an 4:56)

The enormity of their bodies means that the fire will affect them more intensely, increasing their agony.

The Food and Drink of the People of Hell

The punishment in Hell is not limited to physical size and fire. The food and drink of the inhabitants also contribute to their torment. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba explained that the food of the people of Hell includes Ad-Daree' and Az-Zaqqoom, while their drink consists of Al-Hameem, Al-Ghasleen, and Al-Ghassaq.

  • Az-Zaqqoom is described in the Qur’an as a tree that grows in the depths of Hell. Its fruit is like the heads of devils, and it causes extreme pain when swallowed. Allah says:

“Verily, the tree of Zaqqoom will be the food of the sinful, like molten brass; it will boil in their insides, like the boiling of scalding water.” (Qur’an 44:43-46)

  • Al-Hameem is boiling water that scalds the skin and causes unbearable pain.

  • Al-Ghasleen and Al-Ghassaq are other forms of burning liquids or substances that add to the torment.

These foods and drinks provide no nourishment or relief. Instead, they intensify the punishment, ensuring that the people of Hell find no comfort or satisfaction.

The Garments and Appearance of the People of Hell

Another aspect of the punishment is the clothing and appearance of the sinners. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba highlighted that Allah hates nakedness, and in Hell, the people will be clothed in garments of fire and liquid pitch, which only add to their suffering.

The Qur’an describes this vividly:

  • “But for those who deny [their Lord], for them will be cut out a garment of Fire; over their heads will be poured out boiling water.” (Qur’an 22:19)

  • “And you will see the sinners that Day bound together in fetters. Their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered with Fire.” (Qur’an 14:49-50)

These garments are not protective; they are harmful. The boiling water poured over their heads, and the liquid pitch covering their bodies caused continuous pain and humiliation.

The Purpose of These Punishments

The descriptions of Hell’s inhabitants—their size, food, drink, and clothing—serve to illustrate the severity of the punishment for disbelief and sin. The purpose is not just physical suffering but also spiritual torment and regret. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize that these punishments are just consequences for rejecting the truth and committing evil.

The extreme size of the people of Hell, their painful food and drink, and their burning garments all work together to ensure that they truly “taste the Penalty” as a result of their choices in this life.

Reflecting on the Reality of Hell

Understanding the terrifying reality of Hell should inspire reflection and self-accountability. The vivid descriptions in the Qur’an and Hadith remind believers of the importance of faith, righteousness, and seeking Allah’s mercy. The punishment is severe and intended to deter wrongdoing.

This knowledge encourages believers to:

  • Strengthen their faith and avoid actions that lead to punishment.

  • Seek forgiveness and mercy from Allah regularly.

  • Reflect on the consequences of their choices in this life.

The reality of Hell is a powerful reminder of the justice of Allah and the importance of living a life aligned with His guidance.
