The Unfathomable Depths and Location of Hellfire According to Ustadah Laila Nasheeba

Hellfire is a subject that has long captured the attention of scholars and believers alike. Its vastness, depth, and the mystery surrounding its exact location have been topics of discussion and reflection throughout Islamic history. In a recent class on Paradise and Hell, Ustadah Laila Nasheeba shared profound insights into these aspects, drawing from classical scholars and the Qur’an. This post explores her teachings, highlighting the differing scholarly opinions on Hell’s location, its immense size, and the powerful descriptions that emphasize its terrifying reality.

Different Views on the Location of Hellfire

One of the most debated topics among scholars is the current location of Hell. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba explained that scholars have not reached a consensus on this matter. There are three main perspectives:

  • Hell is located in the lower earth: Some scholars believe Hell exists beneath the earth’s surface, in the depths below us.

  • Hell is in the heavens: Others suggest that Hell is situated in the heavens, a place beyond the physical earth.

  • Refraining from speculation: A significant group of scholars, including the renowned Suyuti, choose not to discuss Hell’s location at all. They argue that no clear, authentic reports define where Hell is, and only Allah knows its true place.

The last view is considered the most cautious and correct approach. Discussing Hell’s location without sound evidence can lead to misunderstandings and misrepresentations of the unseen.

The Immense Size of Hellfire

Ustadah Laila Nasheeba emphasized that Hell is not only vast but also immensely deep. Several points illustrate this:

  • The number of people destined for Hell is countless, including disbelievers and evildoers from all times.

  • The physical size of even one of the inhabitants of Hell is enormous. For example, one such being’s molars are said to be as large as Mount Uhud, and the distance between his shoulders equals three days of walking. - Bukhari

  • Despite the enormous size of its inhabitants, Hell can still accommodate all of them with room to spare.

This vastness is supported by the Qur’anic verse:

“On the Day when We will say to Hell: ‘Are you filled?’ It will say: ‘Are there any more?’” (Qur’an 50:30)

This verse powerfully illustrates Hell’s capacity to hold an unending number of souls.

The Depth of Hellfire

The depth of Hell is another aspect that Ustadah Laila Nasheeba highlights. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Hell’s depth in several narrations:

  • He said that on the Day of Resurrection, the sun and moon will be rolled up in Hell. This imagery suggests an immense depth and power within Hellfire.- Bukhari

  • Another hadith mentions that people will continue to be thrown into Hell, and it will keep asking, “Are there any more?” until Allah places His foot in it. At that moment, the different parts of Hell will come closer together, and it will plead, “Enough, enough, by Your glory and honor!” - Bukhari

These descriptions convey a sense of Hell as a living, vast entity that can expand and contract, yet it remains capable of holding countless souls.

Why Scholars Avoid Speculating on Hell’s Location

The reluctance of many scholars to discuss Hell’s exact location stems from the lack of clear evidence. Ustadah Laila Nasheeba referenced Suyuti’s advice:

“Do not discuss Hell, i.e., do not discuss where it may be located, for no one knows this except Allah, and I know of no hadith that I could rely on with regard to this issue.”

This caution helps maintain respect for the unseen and prevents believers from forming inaccurate or speculative beliefs. It also encourages focusing on the moral and spiritual lessons from the descriptions of Hell rather than its physical geography.

The Significance of Understanding Hell’s Vastness

Understanding the vastness and depth of Hellfire serves several important purposes:

  • Reminder of accountability: The immense size and capacity of Hell remind believers of the seriousness of sin and disbelief.

  • Encouragement to seek mercy: Knowing the terrifying reality of Hell motivates believers to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

  • Humility before the unseen: Accepting that the exact details of Hell are known only to Allah fosters humility and trust in divine wisdom.

These lessons help believers maintain a balanced view of the afterlife, focusing on righteous living rather than fear or speculation.

The teachings of Ustadah Laila Nasheeba shed light on the profound and complex nature of Hellfire. While its exact location remains unknown, its vastness and depth are undeniable. The descriptions from the Qur’an and hadith emphasize that Hell is a place of immense capacity, capable of holding countless souls, and a reality that commands respect and reflection. Believers are encouraged to focus on the spiritual lessons from these teachings and to seek Allah’s mercy in all aspects of life.

Reflecting on these truths invites us to live with awareness and purpose, knowing that the unseen world holds realities far beyond our imagination. The vastness of Hellfire is a call to action—to choose the path of righteousness and mercy.
